Education

Children and youth of all ages are invited to join us for Christian Fellowship and ministry events throughout the year. If you or your children would like to be involved, please contact the church office.

A Safe Place for Kids

At Reformation we know the importance of safety for your children. Educational Ministry at Reformation follows the guidelines of the Child Protection Policy. All Sunday School classes and confirmation events are staffed by at least two adults, and all our volunteers have been asked to provide criminal background checks and child abuse clearances.

Sunday School

Reformation Lutheran Church Sunday SchoolOur Sunday School program is open to students ages 3 through adult and runs from September through June. Preschool includes 3 and 4 year old children.  Their curriculum comes from Augsburg Fortress.  Kindergarten through grade 6 uses a monthly rotation which includes drama, a movie, and a craft.  Each rotation centers around a different Bible story.  The curriculum emphasizes discipleship as the basis of faith formation. The Confirmation Class, grades 7-9, uses a confirmation program which emphasizes faith in daily life. The Teen Class uses Faith Lens to stimulate discussion as to how one’s faith is practiced in light of contemporary news and events. The Adult Sunday School Class centers around the lessons heard in that morning’s Worship.

Confirmation

Reformation has a three year confirmation program which usually begins in seventh grade. The program is intended to offer the opportunity for a student to personally affirm his or her commitment to Jesus Christ. In essence the student says “yes” to their baptism. They do so with meaning and integrity, having received instruction in the teaching of the Christian faith. Students in the first two years attend three mini-retreats each year in addition to worship and Sunday School. During the last year of the program students are paired with a congregational mentor and encouraged to engage in monthly activities to discuss growing in their faith. After successfully completing all three years, the students are confirmed on Reformation Sunday.

First Communion

Reformation Lutheran Church first communion altarFirst Communion instruction is offered to students beginning in second grade. Four class sessions allow students and their parents to learn about this important sacrament of the Lutheran church before receiving the meal. Students coming from another congregation who have already communed need not attend these classes, regardless of age.

Vacation Bible School

Reformation Lutheran Church Vacation Bible School VBS Student Performance

Reformation hosts a week-long Vacation Bible School each summer. The dates are usually at the end of July, and ages 3 through grade 6 are invited to participate. There are fun songs, creative crafts, science exploration, exciting games, Bible stories, and tasty snacks. Most importantly, children will learn that no matter what extreme challenges may come their way in life, they will always have Jesus to guide their way. Students in grade seven through adult are invited to teach and help.

Resources

Wegman Memorial Library

Reformation Lutheran Church Wegman Memorial Library
Reformation Lutheran has a library with a wide variety of Christian books and videos for use. The library was dedicated in loving memory of Daniel Wegman, a long-time member of Reformation, on All Saints Sunday, 2007.

The library is divided into two distinct areas: Adult and Youth/Children. The adult area houses books on the following subjects: the Bible, History of Religion, and Devotional Literature. In the Youth section there are books and DVDs for young adults, children’s books on religion, and the Bible.

The library includes the movies watched by the Wednesday study group. Discussion questions are available for these movies in the church office.
All materials are available to be borrowed by following the instructions posted in the library.

Devotional Resources

The Education Committee provides a subscription to The Lutheran magazine to home-bound and new members at Reformation. Christ in Our Home, a daily devotional published quarterly by Augsburg Fortress, is also available in the narthex; seasonally other devotionals are made available.

Written and assembled by our own congregation members, the Reformation Advent  and Lenten Devotionals are available in print in the church narthex at the start of the season and in the Library.
